The ATP fluorescence detector is based on the firefly bioluminescence principle, using a "luciferase-luciferin system" to rapidly detect adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The ATP swab contains a reagent that can lyse cell membranes, releasing intracellular ATP. This ATP reacts with a specific enzyme in the reagent, producing light. The luminescence value is then detected by a fluorometer. The number of microorganisms is directly proportional to the luminescence value. Since all living cells contain a constant amount of ATP, the ATP content clearly indicates the amount of microorganisms and other biological residues in the sample, used to assess hygiene conditions.
